Back in the late 70's, the town council in the Latrobe Valley decided that it was time "Blowfly Road" was re-named. This was duly done. The road lies somewhat east of Churchill (re-named in 1965 after Winston, posthumously). The Blowfly re-naming made the news in distant Melbourne.
A few years later we moved to the district and met a family living in said road. We were told that the old name arose because horses pulling heavy loads would 'blow' on the uphill parts and 'fly' downhill.
What a shame its name was changed! The explanation sounds like the huff-and-puff of a real estate agent, pulling a heavy load. By the way, is Blowfly Road by any other name anywhere near Abbatoir Road, a name that graces properties in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Nigeria - and maybe soon, a street near you?

No, we didn't believe it either.
