It's a dragon lizard. You can't see its eye, but 'distrustful' would describe its cast, not that I deserved the scorn. See Dragons near grandfather's beard for closer views that I took of dragon lizards basking on the middle of a path during another spring.
I'm so glad you were confused, too! It took me a while. Only a woman would have seen it. As it was, in not wanting to disturb it but needing to act fast, I was a bit tied up and almost fell on my face taking this pic.

It took me several minutes to make out the lizard. Excellent photo!
